The Oshadi Collective works around the Tamil Agricultural calendar. Seed-to-sew systems are rooted to the soil and the cycles of nature and the moon, not the traditional seasons of the fashion calendar. We have divided the year into six seasons and you can use this calendar to navigate the journal, season by season
Kaar kaalam
Rainy season
AAVANI
August 15 → September 15
This is the month for boll maturation, then bursting.
PURATTASI
September 15 → October 14
The sowing of seeds is done in amavaasai (new moon) or valar pirai (first quarter) and it increases the germination rate.
Kulir kaalam
Cold, windy season
AIPPASI
October 15 → November 14
Plant growth, bud formation.
KARTHIGAI
November 15 → December 14
Munpani kaalam
Fog and mist during the night
Pongal Festival of Harvest thanking the Sun God and Nature for a prosperous crop yield. Time to plough the fields.
MAARGAZHI
December 15 → January 14
The cotton flowers change from white to pink to dark pink
THAI
January 15 → February 14
The month for boll formation
Pinpani kaalam
Fog and mist during the morning
MAASI

PANGUNI

The temperature goes up to 40 degrees. This is the month for cotton seed sowing.
Elavenil kaalam
Spring season, mild hot weather
Agni natchathiram - a period of 14 days which has peak hot days comes in this period. Each year agni natchathiram days change but it only falls in May.

The cotton plants begin to grow and form buds
